The two numbers that set cost per dose
Cost per dose is not the sticker price divided by milligrams. It is the sticker price divided by the number of complete doses you actually get out of the vial. Those two figures diverge whenever a dose does not divide evenly into the vial size.
The leftover is what this page calls stranded product. It is material you paid for that sits in the vial in a quantity smaller than one dose. You cannot use it as a dose, and combining it with the remainder of a second vial is a decision about handling and sterility that this site does not advise on. For costing purposes, treat stranded material as paid for and unavailable.
So the arithmetic runs in one direction only: pick the dose, divide the vial by it, take the whole number, discard the remainder, then divide the vial price by that whole number. The remainder is the hidden line item most people miss when comparing vial sizes.
What the table above shows
Three things are worth noticing. First, at a 10 mg dose both vial sizes sold divide cleanly. The 10 mg vial gives 1 whole dose and the 50 mg vial gives 5. Neither strands anything, so the wasted fraction is 0% in both rows.
Second, that means the vial size comparison for SS-31 at this dose is unusually simple. Waste is not a differentiator, because there is none in either case. The only variable left is the price you are quoted per vial. Whichever vial gives the lower price per whole dose wins, and no adjustment for stranded product is needed.
Third, a 10 mg vial at a 10 mg dose is a single-dose vial by definition. That has consequences beyond cost. There is no second draw, no storage of a partly used vial, and no question about how long reconstituted material sits. Listings also show a 5 mg dose amount, but the arithmetic for that case is not computed on this page, so do not extrapolate from these rows to it.
Water volume changes concentration, not cost
The water volumes seen in use for SS-31 are 1 mL, 2 mL and 3 mL. Adding more or less bacteriostatic water does not change how many milligrams are in the vial, so it does not change how many whole doses the vial contains and it does not change cost per dose.
What it changes is the number of syringe units per dose. More water means the same milligram amount is spread across more volume, so each dose is a larger, easier to read mark on the barrel. Less water means a smaller mark. That is a measurement-accuracy question, not an economic one.
The practical link back to cost is indirect. If a concentration is high enough that a dose lands on a very small number of units, small drawing errors become a larger percentage of the dose, and material can be lost to imprecision rather than to arithmetic. That loss is real but not something this page quantifies.
What is not known about SS-31
SS-31 is not approved by any regulator for human use. There is no reliable human pharmacokinetic data for it that this site is willing to rely on. That means no claim here about half life, how long it takes to clear, or whether it accumulates with repeated administration.
That gap matters for costing. Cost per dose only converts into cost per week or cost per month once you know how often a dose is given, and frequency is a clinical question. This site does not answer it. If you see a frequency quoted somewhere, understand that it is not derived from anything published that we can verify.

- How much SS-31 is stranded in a vial?
- At a 10 mg dose, none. Both the 10 mg and the 50 mg vial divide evenly, leaving 0 mg stranded and 0% wasted. Stranded product only appears when the dose does not divide into the vial size as a whole number.
- Does using more bacteriostatic water make a vial go further?
- No. The milligrams in the vial are fixed at manufacture. Adding 1 mL, 2 mL or 3 mL changes the concentration and therefore the syringe units per dose, but the number of whole doses in the vial stays the same. Cost per dose is unaffected.
- How often should SS-31 be dosed?
