Price per milligram is the wrong denominator

A vial is sold by its label weight, but you do not use it by weight. You use it in fixed increments. If the dose you draw does not divide evenly into the vial, the last fraction of a dose sits in the vial with nowhere to go. You paid for those milligrams and you cannot inject them as a dose.

So the honest denominator is whole doses, not label milligrams. Take the price you paid for the vial and divide it by the number of complete doses the vial actually contains at your dose size. That figure is higher than price per milligram would suggest, and the gap widens as the mismatch between dose and vial size grows.

This page does not know what you paid. Prices vary by market, seller and pack size, and we do not publish them. What the table gives you is the divisor: the count of whole doses, and the milligrams left behind.

What the table above is telling you

Three things are worth pulling out. First, the 5 mg vial is a poor fit for a 1.8 mg dose. It gives 2 whole doses and strands 1.4 mg, which is 28% of the vial. Nearly a third of the label weight is unusable at that dose size, so the effective cost per dose is far above the naive per milligram figure.

Second, the 10 mg vial fits better. It gives 5 whole doses and strands 1 mg, or 10%. The absolute stranded amount is smaller and it is spread across more doses, so the penalty per dose is much lower.

Third, notice that the stranded amount at 5 mg is larger in absolute terms than at 10 mg, despite the vial being smaller. That is the point. Waste is not proportional to vial size. It is a function of the remainder when the dose divides into the vial, which can be almost a full dose regardless of how big the vial is.

Reconstitution volume changes the syringe reading, not the waste

Liraglutide listings commonly show 1 mL, 2 mL and 3 mL as water volumes. Changing the volume changes the concentration, which changes how many units you draw on the syringe for the same milligram dose. More water means a larger, easier-to-read volume per dose. Less water means a smaller one.

What it does not change is the arithmetic on this page. The number of whole 1.8 mg doses in a 5 mg or 10 mg vial is set by the milligrams in the vial, not by how much water you added. Stranded milligrams stay stranded at every dilution.

Volume choice does affect a different kind of loss: residue in the syringe and needle hub, and product left clinging to the vial walls. Those losses are real but they are not what this table measures, and we do not have figures for them.

Other dose sizes and why they are computed separately

Listings for Liraglutide also show 0.6 mg, 1.2 mg and 3 mg. Each of those divides into a 5 mg or 10 mg vial differently, and each produces its own whole-dose count and its own stranded remainder. A dose that fits one vial size cleanly can be the worst possible fit for another.

The rule to carry away is simple: check the remainder before you buy the vial, not after. If your dose leaves close to a full dose stranded, a different vial size may cost less per usable dose even if it costs more per milligram on the label.
